Which firewood storage suits you? How to choose the right size and finish

Corten steel firewood storage with 4 compartments next to a hedge

Firewood storage keeps your logs off the ground, lets the air through and helps the wood dry further. But which one do you choose? At Geroba, firewood storage comes in five models, dozens of sizes and two materials. That is a lot of choice.

So we built a selection tool: answer 4 short questions and see the models that fit your situation, with size, capacity and price. Here is what to look out for.

In short

  • First decide how much wood you want to store. 1 m³ of stacked wood is roughly 1 stere.
  • Against a wall? Choose a model with back panel. Free-standing or as a divider? An open model looks better.
  • Corten steel develops a warm rust patina, powder-coated steel comes in black, anthracite, black-grey and white and does not stain.
  • Want to sort wood, sit or plant? Choose a model with compartments, a bench or a planter.
  • No standard size fits? Calculate the price of made-to-measure firewood storage yourself.

1. How much wood do you want to store?

Capacity determines size. For an occasional fire, small storage up to about 0.3 m³ is enough. If you light a fire every weekend, count on 0.3 to 0.6 m³. For a stock that lasts several weeks, choose 0.6 to 1.2 m³ or more.

All standard models are 38.5 cm deep, deep enough for regular logs. The smallest version is 30 cm deep.

200 x 38.5 x 200 cm±1.54 m³

2. Where will it stand?

Against a wall, a model with back panel works best: the wood does not touch the wall and everything looks neat. Free-standing in the garden, an open model looks better: you see the wood from both sides and air can flow through. To zone your garden, place one or more tall models side by side as a divider. On a patio, lower models up to 100 cm are handy, close to the fireplace or fire bowl.

3. Corten steel or powder-coated steel?

Corten steel develops a warm rust patina within a few weeks that protects the steel itself. No painting needed, and the colour suits wood, greenery and natural stone. Avoid light-coloured paving, as some rust may run off at first.

Powder-coated steel has a clean, even colour and does not stain. Choose from RAL 9005 (black), RAL 7016 (anthracite), RAL 7021 (black-grey) and RAL 9010 (white). Ideal on a light patio or against a white wall.

4. Anything else it should do?

  • Sort wood in compartments: the Dividi has 2 to 9 compartments, handy to keep kindling and logs apart.
  • Also a bench: the Egura with bench combines low firewood storage with a padouk seat.
  • Combine with plants: the Landa is a planter and firewood storage in one.
  • Modular and decorative: the Honni consists of honeycomb modules you can extend as you like.

Frequently asked questions

How much wood fits in a 100 x 100 cm firewood storage?

A 100 x 38.5 x 100 cm firewood storage holds about 0.39 m³ of stacked wood, a little under half a stere.

Do I need firewood storage with or without a back panel?

Against a wall, choose a back panel: the wood does not touch the wall and it looks neater. Free-standing or as a divider, an open model looks better.

Does Corten steel firewood storage stain?

In the first weeks, Corten steel may release some rust while the protective patina forms. Avoid placing it on light paving. If you want no rust at all, choose powder-coated steel.

How deep is firewood storage?

The standard models are 38.5 cm deep, deep enough for regular logs. The smallest version is 30 cm deep.

Can I have firewood storage made to measure?

Yes. Choose your own width and height and see the price straight away. For another compartment layout, shape or colour, we make it fully to measure.
