The straight element forms the basis of your retaining-wall setup and can be connected with other elements into a continuous wall. By connecting multiple elements together, you can easily build a continuous retaining wall to size. The straight sections, curves and corners can all be combined with each other, so you can follow any layout. Key benefits Straight retaining-wall element for a sleek, stable retaining structure Modular: combinable with straight sections, curves and corners 2 mm material thickness for a sturdy, durable construction Absorbs level differences and keeps soil or gravel in place Low-maintenance and weather-resistant Warm, natural rust look that suits any garden Why choose Corten steel? Corten steel is a weathering steel that forms a natural rust layer outdoors. This layer gives the material its recognisable orange-brown colour and protects the underlying steel from further deterioration. On delivery, the Corten steel may still be steel-grey or only partially rusted. Through rain and outdoor air, the surface gradually develops its warm rust colour, giving each retaining wall a unique, natural character. Use and placement Retaining walls are ideal for edging borders and flower beds, supporting slopes and embankments, or absorbing a height difference along a driveway, patio or garden path. Place the elements on a stable, well-compacted surface and, if necessary, anchor them into the ground for extra stability.
Corten steel retaining walls: how to choose and install them
A retaining wall takes up a difference in level in the garden: for a raised border, a terrace, a driveway or a slope. Corten steel gives a crisp, slim line that works well with plants, gravel, wood and natural stone, and develops its warm rust colour over time.
How is a retaining wall built up?
What does L x W x H mean?
L is the length of the element, W the depth of the base plate and H the height of the wall. For corners and curves, the exact dimensions are on the technical drawing of the product.
Which height do you need?
| Height (H) | Base plate (W) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 200 mm | 100 or 200 mm | Slightly raising a border or path, a subtle difference in level. |
| 350 mm | 150 mm | A raised border or planting bed. |
| 500 mm | 150 mm | A clear difference in level at a terrace, driveway or garden path. |
| 750 mm | 150 or 200 mm | Larger differences in level and slopes. Feel free to have your situation checked. |

Installation in 5 steps
- 1Prepare the base
Provide a hard, level foundation on which the base plate rests fully, for example a concrete strip. The wall does not need to be dug in, but a foundation is always required. - 2Place and connect
Put the elements in place and bolt them together through the end plates with the bolts and nuts supplied. Tighten the bolts loosely first, align the wall, and only then tighten them fully. - 3Anchor
Fix the base plate to the foundation through the pre-drilled holes, for example with plugs and bolts. - 4Drain
Place a layer of gravel behind the wall and cover it with a permeable membrane. This lets rainwater drain away and keeps the pressure on the wall down. - 5Backfill
Backfill the soil in layers and firm each layer lightly. The soil on the base plate adds to the stability.
Frequently asked questions
Does a retaining wall need to be dug into the ground?
No, that is not necessary. The wall must stand on a hard base though: a foundation is always required. Bolts, nuts and connecting plates are supplied.
How many elements do I need?
Measure the total length of your line and subtract the length of the corners and curves. Fill the rest with straight elements of 1000, 1500 or 2000 mm. Choose all elements in the same height so the top edge runs through neatly.
Can I combine straight elements, corners and curves?
Yes. All shapes of the same height connect through the end plates, so you can follow any line, straight or rounded. Bolts and nuts are always included.
Do I need to anchor the retaining wall?
A retaining wall is always placed on a foundation: a hard, level base to which you fix the base plate through the pre-drilled holes. In doubt, just contact us.
Why gravel and a membrane behind the wall?
Water standing behind the wall increases the pressure on it and keeps the steel wet for longer. A draining layer of gravel covered with a permeable membrane carries the water away.
How does the colour of corten steel change?
On delivery the steel may still be grey or partly rusted. Rain and outdoor air form a protective rust layer with the typical warm colour. Some rust can run off at first, so protect light paving during that period. Our rust accelerator speeds up the process.
Can I have a retaining wall made to measure?
Yes. If you need a different length, height or corner, or a larger difference in level than our standard heights, we make the retaining wall to measure. Request a free quote.
A different size or a larger difference in level?
We also make retaining walls to measure, for private customers as well as landscapers and architects.
