XXL bee hotel for Nerdland at Domein Puyenbroeck

XXL corten steel bee hotel shaped like the Nerdland N at Domein Puyenbroeck

For Nerdland we welded a fully custom XXL bee hotel in corten steel, shaped like the recognisable Nerdland N. It stands as a permanent installation on the festival grounds at Domein Puyenbroeck, where it withstands weather, wind and thousands of visitors.

A fine example of what custom work in public spaces can be: an original design, translated into a robust, low-maintenance object.

Designed in collaboration with BIG BEAR Studio.

FOR WHOM

For those who shape public spaces

Municipalities and cities

Greenery on squares, in shopping streets and along cycle paths, with planters that also act as traffic calming or boundaries.

Schools and campuses

Greening playgrounds and school grounds with sturdy planters and wooden seating edges.

Care and wellbeing

Calm, green outdoor spaces at care homes and hospitals, with seating at the right height.

Business parks and offices

A well-kept entrance and office garden that matches your corporate identity, in corten steel or a RAL colour.

Housing projects and owners' associations

Shared gardens, courtyards and mailbox clusters for apartment buildings.

Parks, estates and recreation

Tree rings, retaining walls and edging that structure the landscape without dominating it.

Why invest in greenery on streets and squares?

De-paving and letting water infiltrate

Bottomless planters and tree rings give trees and plants real soil, so rainwater can soak into the ground again.

Cooler places in summer

Trees and plants provide shade and cooling on paved squares and playgrounds.

Places to meet

With a wooden seating edge, a planter becomes a meeting place for residents, pupils or care home residents.

MATERIALS

Three materials made for the outdoors

Corten steel

Corten steel

After a few months, corten steel forms a stable, warm brown patina that protects the steel. The result is a natural look that pairs beautifully with greenery, brick and natural stone.

Good to know: during the first weathering phase, rust-coloured run-off can occur. Plan a gravel strip or take it into account on light-coloured paving.

Powder-coated aluminium

Powder-coated aluminium

Light, rustproof and available in any RAL colour. Ideal when planters need to match the house style of a municipality, school or company, or the architect's colour palette.

Thanks to its low weight, also suitable for roof terraces and places where load capacity matters.

Hardwood seating edge on a corten steel planter

Solid hardwood

For seating edges, benches and wooden planters. Wood feels warm, even on a chilly day, and turns a planter into a place where people like to sit down.

Our wood species fall into durability class 1 or 2 (EN 350). Untreated, hardwood gradually weathers to a silver-grey tone; to keep the warm colour, it can be oiled periodically.

Corten steel and hardwood also work very well together, for example in a planter with a wooden seating edge. Want to know more? Read all about corten steel, aluminium and hardwood.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Public space projects

Can Geroba prepare a quote based on our specifications?
Yes. Send your specifications, bill of quantities or plan via the form at the bottom of this page. We quote per item, so you can easily compare it and add it to your file.
Are different sizes, colours or large quantities possible?
Yes. Besides our standard range, we make planters, tree rings, retaining walls and other metalwork to measure, in the dimensions and quantities your project requires. Aluminium is available in any RAL colour. See also our custom work options.
Is corten steel suitable for busy public places?
Corten steel is strong, forms a protective patina and needs hardly any maintenance. Keep in mind that it can release rust-coloured run-off in the first months. On light paving we recommend a gravel strip or raised placement. If you want to avoid this, choose powder-coated aluminium.
Can planters and benches be anchored?
We assess this per project. For custom work, fixing points can be provided so elements can be secured to the ground. Mention it in your request and we will include it in the proposal.
Where can I find technical data sheets and drawings?
Product data such as dimensions and weight are on every product page. Technical documents can be found in our downloads. Need a specific drawing for your file? We will provide it on request.
Do professional customers and public authorities get adjusted prices?
Professional customers can request a B2B account and then see their own prices in the webshop. For projects with larger quantities we always prepare a custom quote.
How does hardwood behave in public spaces?
Solid hardwood is a natural product that keeps moving outdoors. Untreated, it weathers to a silver-grey tone, which does not affect its durability. Small hairline cracks and slight discolouration from tannins in the first weeks are normal. To keep the warm wood colour, it can be oiled periodically.
