Coated steel

Coated steel is steel with a protective zinc layer, powder-coated in the RAL colour of your choice. Sleek, colourfast and low-maintenance.

What is it?

Coated steel is steel that is first given a zinc layer to protect it against corrosion, and is then powder-coated in a RAL colour of your choice. At Geroba this material is used among other things in our letterboxes, where it gives a sleek, colourfast finish that does not rust and does not develop a rust patina the way Corten steel does.

Properties

  • Protective zinc layer against corrosion
  • Powder-coated finish, available in almost any RAL colour
  • Keeps its colour, does not develop a rust patina
  • Low-maintenance and weather-resistant
  • Can be combined with Corten steel in combi versions

What does Geroba use coated steel for?

Coated steel is found in our letterboxes and can also be combined with Corten steel in combi versions, for a striking contrast between a warm rust colour and a sleek, coloured finish.

FAQ coated steel

Corten steel develops a natural rust patina and has a warm, orange-brown colour that changes over the years. Coated steel is galvanised and powder-coated in a fixed RAL colour, and keeps that colour without rusting or discolouring. The choice is mainly a question of the look you want: natural and organic versus sleek and colourfast.

Coated steel is very low-maintenance. Cleaning it now and then with water and a soft cloth or mild soap is enough to keep the coating looking good for years. Avoid abrasive products and a pressure washer at close range.

The powder coating withstands normal use and weather conditions. Deep scratches that reach the steel can cause local rust formation; we recommend repairing these in good time. Avoid hard, abrasive contact with the surface.

Coated steel can be powder-coated in almost any RAL colour. Our most frequently chosen colours are RAL 9005 (black), RAL 7016 (anthracite grey), RAL 7021 (black grey) and RAL 9010 (white), but other RAL colours are possible on request.

Yes. Several of our letterboxes are available in a combi version, in which Corten steel and coated steel are used together for a striking contrast between a warm rust colour and a sleek, coloured finish.

Maintenance of coated steel

Coated steel needs little maintenance. Clean it regularly with lukewarm water and a soft cloth or mild soap to remove dirt and deposits. Our Geroclean maintenance cleaner was developed specifically to clean and refresh powder-coated surfaces safely.

Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, scouring pads and a pressure washer at close range: these can damage the powder coating. If a scratch does reach the steel, repair it in good time to prevent rust.

That way your letterbox or other product in coated steel stays sleek and colourfast for years.
