Hardwood
Alongside metal, Geroba also uses solid hardwood: a natural material with a warm appearance that is already well able to withstand wind and weather on its own.
What is it?
The hardwood versions in our range, such as the Artesa planter, are made from solid hardwood in durability class 1 or 2. This is wood that naturally resists moisture and decay for a long time, without additional chemical treatment. The planter is not welded but built up from solid wood, with a clean finish.

What does Geroba use hardwood for?
At Geroba, hardwood appears in four product groups: planters, letterboxes, garden furniture and firewood storage. The Xilta letterbox and the Egura firewood storage are always in padouk. The other products are made from solid hardwood in durability class 1 or 2, with the same dimensions and the same design as the Corten steel and aluminium versions.

Maintenance
Hardwood needs little maintenance, but turns grey over time through exposure to sun and rain. If you want to keep the warm colour of the wood, treat the planter regularly with a suitable wood oil. Place the planter on a flat, stable surface so that water can drain away properly through the feet and the drainage holes.

FAQ hardwood
The durability class indicates how long untreated wood naturally resists attack by fungi and insects when used outdoors and in contact with soil or moisture. Classes 1 and 2 are the highest classes: these types of wood last for decades in normal outdoor use, even without chemical treatment.
Under the influence of UV light and the weather, a grey weathered layer forms on the surface of the wood. This is a natural and harmless process that does not affect the quality of the wood. If you want to keep the warm, original colour, treat the wood periodically with a suitable wood oil.
Hardwood in durability class 1 or 2 needs no maintenance to stay weather-resistant. If you want to keep the warm colour instead of letting the wood turn grey, we recommend treating it regularly with a suitable wood oil.
FSC is a label that assesses forest management at source: how the forest is managed and harvested. The EUDR (European Deforestation Regulation) is legislation requiring wood to be fully traceable and demonstrably deforestation-free, regardless of the country of origin. The two complement each other to guarantee responsible and legal timber.
As with any natural product, small cracks (hairline cracks) can appear in hardwood through expansion and shrinkage with changes in temperature and humidity. This is a normal phenomenon that does not affect the strength of the product.
All our products are made from solid hardwood, a natural product whose appearance can differ from piece to piece. Under the influence of moisture, temperature and weather conditions, wood can move (shrink, expand or distort slightly). Colour differences, both between different pieces of wood and over time through exposure to light and open air (greying), are a normal and intended characteristic of solid wood and not a shortcoming. The same applies to the grain pattern, small hairline cracks and drying cracks that can appear during the drying process, and to small worm holes in tropical species: these are characteristics of the natural product and do not indicate a defect in quality or finish. Complaints relating solely to these natural properties are not accepted as grounds for warranty, repair or replacement.
FSC label & EUDR
We work with the FSC label, the international standard for responsible forest management, and comply with the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Where FSC assesses forest management at source, the EUDR requires full traceability and a deforestation-free origin for all the wood we process.
In this way we safeguard on several levels that our wood is produced responsibly and legally, from forest to garden.
